Intrapreneurs – Who, What, How and Why explores the world of Intrapreneurs. They are individuals inside organizations that are building new businesses, new products, services and processes that create value and generate new revenue growth. Often referred to as corporate entrepreneurs, mavericks, change agents and internal entrepreneurs.
The book was inspired by a network of Intrapreneurs from around the world that are changing business as usual. They are changing the way we work, the way we look at opportunities, solve problems and leverage technology to address social and business issues. They are rewriting the rules and leading organizations into the future.
Yet, despite the hype and growing interest in Intrapreneurs there has been a lack of understanding about who these individuals are, what they do, how they do it, and why it is important.
We’ve spent the last decades working with intrapreneurs and researching who they are, what they do, how they are different and the value they bring to organizations. We’ve found that they possess a unique combination of competencies that distinguish them from their peers. It wasn’t just one or two competencies but the breadth and depth of those competencies that separated them from others.
We’ve also found that they look at the world through a different lens. They have a different mindset, thinking process, decision making and propensity to act. These factors influence what they do and how they do it. These success factors often determine their effectiveness and success as an intrapreneur.
More importantly we’ve learned that being an Intrapreneur is not an intellectual exercise it is developed and refined through experience. Not by doing business as usual but by taking the initiative to try something new, different, and unconventional. It’s all about the challenge. The bigger, more difficult the challenge the better. Intrapreneurs are not afraid to fail, only concerned if they don’t try.
